Building a Backyard Brick Patio

I rented a house in Rosemead from a Chinese man. I was not allowed to remove any carpets, but I was allowed to plant a garden and do some landscaping. Here, a mass of old bricks became a useful new patio.

A note of caution: the cement mortar clinging to old bricks can be an asbestos hazard. Before you go about recycling old chimneys and walls, be absolutely sure the mortar doesn't contain asbestos. Prolonged exposure to the fine dust particles is a prime factor behind asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare cancer.
