This place has probably prevented dozens of plane crashes. It would be great if more planes retired here earlier. The threat of a plane crash always used to loom foremost in my mind whenever I flew somewhere. Now, I don't fly at all. There are so many minor mechanical issues that can bring a plane down. From fraying electrical wires to flammable insulation, worn out lifters to tails falling off -- the variety of possible foibles is too great. Plane crashes really would be less likely if more airplanes went to an early grave. Besides, older planes are probably less fuel-efficient than the newest models. As it is, air travel guzzles the most fuel per capita. For most jumbo jets, it’s likely less gas would be spent if each passenger drove the entire trip in a personal Hummer rather than flying. Hopefully the newer planes will start addressing this environmental issue.
