Horticulture's fixation on roses deserves special criticism. Backyard gardeners the world over have sprayed untold quantities of noxious pesticides in their efforts to cultivate this plant. The negative externalities have yet to be fully enumerated or understood. Series Description: Often, men send flowers to me; sometimes, flower delivery is courtesy of my son on birthdays & holidays; rarely, I'll drop into the florist myself. But flower shops pale in comparison to open fields blooming on their own. Regardless of source, I consider flowers to be the premier gift for women.
