Sapelo Island Prickly Pears in GA

The University of Georgia Marine Institute has picked a fine locale. All around its grounds, an Opuntia species copiously bears fierce but delicious fruits.

This is one of the most underappreciated fruits in North America. Sweet, succulent and refreshing, it beats any old supermarket apple hands down! And it's free for the taking. One of hundreds of fine eating opportunities to be had in the wild outdoors, it stands ready for the day when people will see the light and come to enjoy foraging once more.

A word of caution however: use heavy gloves. The miniscule thorns that cover the fruit are not to be taken lightly.

Series Description: Fresh fruit is delicious, and it can be an object of beauty. As gifts, as healthy sustenance & hydration, as medicine -- fruits deserve far more attention. Related series: Gourmet Food.
