On the edge of his blooming - Paphiopedilum

Which came first: commerce or fraud? Logically, it would seem legitimate flowers must have preceded this trickster's emergence. Had there not already been plenty of gullible insects seeking nectar/pollen bearing flowers, the lady-slippers would never have found a mark.

Then again, perhaps pheremone traps could have been first on the scene. More typical angiospermes might then have exploited commerce to greater effect, with insects already accustomed to visiting flowers for no good reason. It's an interesting possibility.

dark, funereal, tenebrous, dying, wilting, trap trapped by demise, insect trickery, deep violet
