The construction of such ponds need not be complicated. At Duke, there are elaborate pond liners topped with slate. But in my backyard, a solid clay subsoil meant I could do without liners. Pond construction for me involved a lot of digging, and then planting & fish stocking. The exercise was invigorating, and the result continues to entertain daily.
