Art exhibits can do wonders for quieting the incessant crying of toddlers. Perhaps the serene focus on aesthetics soothes. On one of my train travels, a fellow passenger just a few seats away allowed her baby to cry violently for the better part of two hours. No attempt whatsoever was made to assuage the toddler's anguish. I think she was "teaching him a lesson." Arguably, the parent in the above drawing has discovered a far more effective pedagogy. After all, abundant attention and stimulus are said to be the key to proper toddler development. At the very least, there's less sobbing to endure. Regularly viewing the works of old masters proved educational... almost like an art school.
